Charlie Shaw scored 3:17 into overtime to give the Boston Warriors (E) a 2-1 victory over the Long Island Warriors – Orange in a Division E playoff game Sunday at Bill Torrey (Red) Rink. David Williams and Tyler Hicks assisted on the winner, giving Williams three assists on the afternoon and Hicks two.
The teams played a scoreless first two periods before the game exploded in the third. Andrew Bosworth opened the scoring for Boston at 11:00, finding the net with helpers from Williams and Walter Guertin. Long Island answered just 29 seconds later, as Jon Rothenberg buried a feed from Tom Capuano and Paul Decanio at 11:29 to force overtime.
Long Island entered the day 2-0 and unbeaten, while Boston came in at 1-1 having split its results. The two clubs had met just a day earlier, playing to a 0-0 draw on Aug. 8, so Sunday’s extra-session finish provided the first goals — and the first decisive result — between them this season. Only two penalties were called, with Decanio and Boston’s Brian Winters each taking minor infractions in the second period.
Brian Ellis picked up the win in goal for Boston, allowing one goal, while Pat Massamillo took the overtime loss for Long Island after giving up two. Rothenberg’s third-period goal continued his strong start to the season, and Shaw’s overtime tally gave the Boston Warriors the edge in a series that now shifts back to Long Island for the next matchup.
