Cam Wickens stopped 43 of 44 shots, and Ian Buswell scored the go-ahead goal in the second period as Central Maine Community College beat Sacred Heart University 2-1 on Sunday at 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid. All three goals came in a span of less than two and a half minutes in the middle period.
After a scoreless first period, Central Maine took the lead while short-handed. Carter Walls scored unassisted with 8:46 left in the second period for a 1-0 advantage. It was his second goal of the season after he scored once in his first game.
Sacred Heart tied it on the power play with 6:47 remaining in the period. Collin Roulston scored from Matthew Cox and Ryan Davis, and Roulston now has five points this season after entering with two goals and two assists in four games. Central Maine answered 23 seconds later when Buswell scored at even strength with 6:24 left, assisted by Sam Foley. It was the first point of the season for both players.
Neither team scored in the third period, and Wickens finished with a .977 save percentage to earn the win. Sacred Heart used two goaltenders. Brian Brusco stopped all 19 shots he faced, and Christian Gonsalves made 12 saves on 14 shots. The teams combined for eight penalties, six of them by Central Maine, including two minors by Foley.
Central Maine moved to 1-1-0, and Sacred Heart fell to 2-2-1. Both teams will look to build on early-season results in their next games.
