Jack Hinteman scored twice and added an assist, and Jacob Caradonna recorded a shutout as Smithtown/Hauppauge beat East Islip 7-0 on Monday night at The Rinx – North Rink. Robert Auerbach and Marcus D’Errico each finished with a goal and two assists, and Ryan Anderson also scored twice for Smithtown/Hauppauge, which improved to 2-0-0-1. East Islip fell to 1-1-0-0.
Both student sections were out in full force before the opening faceoff, and Smithtown/Hauppauge gave its fans plenty to cheer early. Hinteman, who entered with a goal and four assists through two games, opened the scoring with 11:57 left in the first. Auerbach’s shot was blocked, but he recovered and returned the puck to Hinteman for a backdoor tap-in. Ryan Anderson made it 2-0 with 5:31 remaining in the period, finishing another backdoor feed on a play set up by Auerbach and Hinteman.
East Islip appeared to be gaining some momentum in the second period before Auerbach scored with 9:13 left. He finished a determined backhand from behind the goal line, with John Avlonitis assisting, to make it 3-0. Hinteman then scored his second goal of the night, an unassisted power-play goal under the bar with 5:31 left that pushed the lead to 4-0. D’Errico had been quiet early but broke through with 1:20 remaining in the period, staying poised on a shorthanded breakaway to make it 5-0 off a Ryan Buscarino assist.
The Anderson brothers finished the scoring with two goals 34 seconds apart in the third period. Ryan Anderson, who came in with five goals in two games, scored with 10:26 left on a feed from D’Errico. At 9:52, Luke Anderson used his speed to beat a defender to a loose puck and one-timed a shot into the top corner, again set up by D’Errico. That goal made it 7-0, and the East Islip student section thinned out as the game slipped away.
Caradonna seemed to be in the right position all night as East Islip searched for offense, including on the power play. Ryan Rauscher allowed seven goals and took the loss in his second varsity start for East Islip, which was coming off an 8-1 win over South Manor.
Both teams return to the ice Wednesday, September 30.
